Plasminogen is converted by thrombin, factor XII, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), urokinase, or lysosomal enzymes to the active enzyme plasmin. Plasmin breaks the fibrin molecules and therefore the clot into smaller pieces, which are washed away in the blood or are phagocytized.
